This week was equally great and challenging as I started my unit. I have never taught money before and although I knew my students have never been taught this concept, I underestimated how basic I would have to make it. That’s great you provided your own solution to your challenges! I can’t imagine trying to teach about money when you have students not even think about it on a daily basis like most adults. Can second grade students use any kind of tech to help with adding? I think they have to learn this by memorization facts, right? It must be a struggle. I’m so used to having my high school students use calculators if they struggle with arithmetic. Sort of ironic, but I have students that still struggle with things like 6 divided by -1! Boy, it would be great for me to have the opportunity to have groups of 5 like you did for any concept kids struggle with and have an adult to help out. But I understand I should be able to do this at the high school level without adult supervision, but in reality, I would like copies of myself helping them all at once! Good luck with the rest of your unit. Sounds like we all have our challenges and success this first week!

I love how you clearly identified your struggles and successes. Your challenge of students needing to have a strong ability to add and subtract seems like it really could hinder your unit. Are you going to be able to have mini-lessons on this or one on one? Or will you have these students work specifically on this weaker skill? I always wonder what other teachers plan to do, because I know I struggle coming up with ideas.
